Owain Roberts and His Award-Winning Leeks
One of the standout successes from last year’s shows is Owain Roberts with his award-winning leeks. Owain has been growing his spectacular vegetables in a Haygrove Garden Tunnel for years, and his results are nothing short of impressive.
When we visited Owain to re-cover his 14-year-old Garden Tunnel, we were amazed by his leeks. Situated 1000 feet above sea level, his polytunnel site is particularly exposed to the wind. Despite these challenging conditions, Owain’s leeks thrive, starting off in November in a heated greenhouse and moving to the Garden Tunnel by April.
Owain attributes the healthy, scorch-free leaves of his produce to the unique properties of the Haygrove Garden Tunnel cover. The woven polythene material used for the cover diffuses light effectively, scattering it as it enters the tunnel. This prevents the scorching of leaves and allows the light to penetrate deeply into the plant canopy, ensuring robust and healthy growth.
